Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday ruled that all sports bodies, co-operative banks, sugar mills and private schools taking government aid come under the ambit of Right to Information Act.
Deciding on a bunch of petitions related to the Act, the High Court bench of Justice MS Sullar observed that as these bodies get government aid, they are public authorities and hence they are liable to share information sought under the provisions of RTI Act.
“RTI was framed to bring transparency in the system, but some organizations are indulged in making it a failure,” the court observed.
After the verdict private schools, Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), Mohali, Jalandhar Lawn Tennis Association and Sutlej Club, Ludhiana would also come under the ambit of RTI.
Earlier Anil Kashyap had moved High Court after he was denied information by the PCA. He had queried about some members of the PCA and Mohali cricket stadium.
